Daniel Pink - Drive

Okay, I love this guy as an author. He is who I want to be when I grow up and learn to write. The last part of this book has the best summary of the book I have seen in any book. On his website, he has a twitter and cocktail party summary for sharing.

The Book in Three Sentences

Much of what we know about motivation is wrong.

Tasks are either: (1) Algorithmic—you pretty much do the same thing over and over in a certain way, or (2) Heuristic—you have to come up with something new every time because there are no set instructions to follow.

The carrot and stick approach to motivation is flawed.

Researchers have found that extrinsic rewards can be effective for algorithmic tasks—those that depend on following an existing formula to its logical conclusion.
